Hariata, wife of the formidable Hone Heke and daughter of the great Ngāpuhi chief, Hongi Hika, led many war troops through battle, often wearing a tartan skirt, red jacket and blue bonnet adorned with red feathers. Special guests Dr Angela Middleton (archaeologist and author), Maureen Lander and Heather Randerson (artists) will share stories about Hariata and others, and their artwork at the Toi Ngāpuhi Māori Art Exhibition.
Whai i te kōrero
Listen to the sweet delivery of whaikōrero by HineiraTipene-Komene and Ezekial Raui. Hineira won Senior Bilingual (Tā Himi Henare) and Ezekial won Senior Māori (Pei Te Hurunui Jones) at the Tai Tokerau Ngā Manu Kōrero Competitions. Both students represented Te Tai Tokerau at the 2015 National Ngā Manu Kōrero Competitions held in Porirua and will be delivering their competition winning speeches.
